Theme of Choices

In literature, as in life, people make choices that have both positive and negative effects.
What kind of choices have been made in The Fighting Ground?

the theme that stood out the most so far in this book would be: islolation & allianation. because jonathan was only thirteen, amongst men that were twice or three times his age he probably felt very akward. because he was smaller he had to do things diffrent than the other soldiers. he even said as much when the book said " he didn't like the notion that he had to hold his gun this way but he had little choice" on pg. 19.

the theme that stood out the most to me was war. It stood out to me bacause Jonathan was so passionate about this war. He really wanted to be in it as a soldier. it said that Jonathan wanted to fight so bad that he even wished he had his dad's gun at the moment he got to the camp by the tavern. he really wanted to fight.

i really dont think it was only that but it was an interesting take on his situation.

The theme that stood out to me the most in the book was life and death because jonathan was only 13 years old and he was really young to go to war. It is risking your life to go to war.It is a life and death game. An example that shows this is, " you handle a gun?" he asked. "yes sir," jonathan managed to get out. it supports my opinion because he got the gun and he is ready to go to war which risks his life and death.

the theme that stood out the most for me is choices. He made lots of choices like leaving his father and mother behind and go to war without telling them. Throughout the book it states many different choices he made. This made me think about how this effects about whats going to happen because of his decisions. he even said " going to fight" Jonathon said. "I heard there were enemy troops fifteen or twenty."Also it stated that reluctantly, he decided he just have to wait and learn by watching the others.

Alright, so the main choice of the book that i chose was war. War stood out to me because Jonathon really wanted to go for war but he couldn't because his father wouldn't let him. In the book it says " Jonathan dreamed of one day taking up a gun himself, and fighting the enemy".

I have to agree with jeffin because he did make a lot of choices hard and easy.

Alienation stood out to me because he was a thirteen year old boy and everyone else was making him feel awkward, as willaim said.
The thing that made me say this was when it said "all the men were holding their guns on their shoulder but he couldnt because it cut into his shoulder"

I feel that the theme of the story so far is choices. Jonathan made the choice to go out and fight without his fathers permission. He made up his mind. "Going to fight.' said Jonathan."(pg 23) He said this and proved to me that he really wanted to fight. I think Jonathan did not pick the correct choice but he is sure of himself.

the mainiest theme of this book is isolation and alienation, because in the book it states "frustrated, he went over to the bell.though he would've rather spoken to one of the men, he spoke to his young friend." thiis means that he felt neglected and ignored by the men just because he was a youngster=]. omg hes thirteen. at leat he ready to fight(and he IS older than MOST of us!!!!). thiis is y i think the mainiest theeeme for thiis storii is isolation n alienation

choice
something i learned is that the citation on pg 10 says "and even as he stood there, unsure what to do, the bell resumed its vibrant call. he could go home............or to the tavern. IT shows that he had a choice and he just had to decide on one.

So after reading the few first pages of the book i can to my decision that the theme would be choices.in the book, jonathan had to make many desicions. In the book around in page 10 i can quote or take out the citation " 'do it' he told himself 'go and fight!'" from here i can say that jonathan was making a CHOICE, am i right. Another part of the paragraph was " He began towards the bell." this shows us he has made his decision to jion the war crowd. Ther were soooooooooo...... many other citations but that was all i could find. Bye

seeeeeeee even falaks comment citation was on pg 10. that was one great page

If I were Johnathan I would have made my choices more carefully. For example, On page 23 it clearly shows Johnatham has made up his mind about going to war, "Going to fight",said Johnathan. In my opinion Johnathan should have listened to his father who knows what's best for him and he should have not fought in the war. It shows clearly on page 19, it states that in comparison to the other Solidiers Johnathan was weaker, " He didn't like the notion that he had to hold his gun this way but, he had little choice."As you can see, not necessarily bad but poor choices have put a burden upon Johnathan.

I feel Jeffin's citations had nothing to do with the main topic of his paragraph which was mainly about Johnathan's choices, as he went to war. The rest of his paragraph was full of general statements about Johnathan's expierience going to war.

Hey MISS roura this is my theme, this is my citation of bling ring. Its on page 24 and 25 you could catch it with your big fat eye.(PS your eye is perfectly fine.) Check this, jonathon made stupid choices, he lied to his felllow freinds, and fellow soldiers. He also made an bad choice to go to war. I feel he does not know the true meaning of war, it is not fun and games.

I realize that jonathan wanted to go to war but I think it was stupid of him to go to war. i think this because in the book it says “'do it' he told himself 'go and fight!'" His farther was scared but he wasn’t (p 10) and this means that a man who has gone to war and came back alive still has fear when jonathan hasn’t experienced it still isn’t afraid

It annoyed me that Jonathan made up his mind to go to war{or rather to fight against the group attacking group}. Even though it was only "15" or "20", it was still very dangerous. I don't exactly think it was the best choice. As it said in the book "And even as he stood there, unsure what to do the bell resumed its vibrant call. He could go home... or to the tavern." This choice he took, which occured on page 10 should have been, in my opinion to go back home.

thanks mateen for that wonderful comment.
Jonothan, a 13 year old that thinks war is fun. Joothan makes crucial choices in his life. He told to his fathers freind on page 24-25, how his dad, a soldier with an broken leg let him go and fight. I predict next time jonothan will make a better choice of honesty and justice, to himself and people around him.

I loved Serosh's. She had a lot of citations and details to support each one.
Although, I think she has to add a few more quotation marks in some places. She also had a few speeling errors. Overall, it was fantastic!

i think that jonathan is getting a little ahead of himself. he needs to think his choices over more. i mean he cant even hold a musket right. like when he said "going to finght" to his fathers friend i think that he might have said it a little skeptically.

i agree with Goerge 100%!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I think choices was the theme because Jonothan made choices throughout the story. For example, he chose to go to war. This was an important choice. His choice could result in death or lead him back to his everyday life. Truly, this is why i think Choices was the theme of "The Fighting Ground".

Hi I think that the theme for this story is war. I think that it is war because ummmm oh because Jonathon is thirteen and wants to go to war which is pretty strange to me and it seems like a bad idea

Anonymous said...

Yeah I realy think the theme for the book is choices because Jonathon made a strange choice in joining the war.Isn't it pretty wierd for a thirteen year old to join in a war. Well that was his choice and thats why I feel that the theme is choices.

I realized that Jonathan wanted to make his own choices in life even though he was only 13 yrs old. When his father said "don't go beyond" Jonathan still did and went to help the soldiers showing that he wanted to make his own choices.

I realized that Jonathon wants to make his own choices in life even though he's only 13. When his father said " don't go beyond" Jonathon still did by joining the Corparal. That means he disobeyed his father's decision on him staying away from war.

*****Elise***** said...

If i were Jonathon, I would not get my self in this situation. I would listen to my dad or whomever it would be and stay out of it. Clearly he did not listen, and i have proof: "Do it" He told himself."Go and Fight". He was not afraid (well at least he did not want anyone to see him scared.)The theme that stood out the most to me was Life and Death. To me, it is really hard to listen to people talk about death. I hate that word, i hate the thoughts in my head that remind me of loved ones that have died. Its like a ghost that will haunt you for ever and will never stop.AND YOU KEEP THINKING THAT THOSE LOVED ONES WHOM ARE DEAD COULD BE YOU SOME DAY.It is so creepy. Thats life though!!!

I found it interesting that life and death play such big roles in the begginning of the book. I thought that this theme would be talked about further on in the novel. So far I have seen many ways in which the characters discuss this. The main character that discusses this Jonathan's father. He repeatedly tells Jonathan that the war is to dangerous for him and that he doesnt want to face the tragedy of Jonathan's death. He most likely says this because on page 3 it says,"His father... limped".It is very probable that he was at war and this was what happened to him for trying to go to war without having a more realistic view. Jonathan without noticing the pain in his fathers eyes he decides to go to war without knowing that he could easily be killed. He decides to go on page 10 in which it states,"But if he went to the tavern,he knew it wouldnt be just to get the news. HE MEANT TO GO AND FIGHT." Last, near the ending of the chapter the tavern keeper who is also aware of the life and death situaqtion says, "You take care of yourself." Perhaps once Jonathan is ay war he will realize watr isnt glory, it ios a gruesome battle of death.

Anonymous said...

If I were Jonathon, I would've thought more about going to war.He is willing to be a soldier for the glory, but he has not thought about the consequences that may come. He does not realize that he is making a great mistake.
On page 5, it says: " And hadn't Jonathon talked to his friends of war, battles old and new, strategies fit for major generals? And having fought their wars, they had always won their glory, hadn't they?"
Well, all it proves to me is that he is not ready for war and that he should wait a little to become a soldier.

I reaized that Jonathan just made a choice that probably will affect the rest of his life. I think that he should have gave more thought to his decisions and as his choice was based on the uniforms and the musket he wished to have, not the sufferings or the hardships of war, I think that it was not a well thought out choice. To me the theme that stood out the most was the theme of choices. A single moment of decision could change your whole life. "And even as he stood there, unsure of what to do, the bell resumed its vibrant call. He could go home or to the tavern..."Do it!" he told himself. Go and fight." I think that Jonathan ( in this case I agree with Elise)should have checked with his father or at least have written a letter saying where he was going, because family is important and he could die any second, without his family knowing what had happened to him. However, I think that this wil be a  good experience for Jonathan because there are some things that he have to see and experience hiumself, even if it will be painful.

Stephanie M. said...

i agree with diana, the choice Jonathon made will probably affect him for the rest of his life physically and/or emotionally and like i said he's just in it for the glory. A word to Jonathon: BEING A SOLDIER TAKES FOR GREAT RESPONSIBILTY!!!!!
